Set up a product as a modifier

Before a product can join a modifier group, it needs to exist in your catalog and be set to the Modifier product type.

Modifiers are regular products in your catalog, like a pump of syrup or a scoop of whipped cream, that have been marked as modifiers. Two things need to be true before a product can be added to a modifier group:

1. The product exists in your catalog

Create the modifier like any other product in Products → Product Catalog. If it's something you never sell on its own, that's fine. Marking it as a modifier (below) handles that.

2. Its product type is set to Modifier

  1. Open the product from the Product Catalog.

  2. On its Product Management page, switch Product Type to Modifier.

Heads-up: A modifier product can belong to only one modifier group.

If you want the same option in two groups (say, whipped cream on both Pancake Toppings and Waffle Toppings), create a separate modifier product for each group.

Once both are done, the product will appear in the search results when you add products to a modifier group.
